Google Toolbar Gets Personal

Users Can Now Customize their Search Experience with Latest Version of Google Toolbar

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., January 30, 2006 – Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) today announced the latest version of Google Toolbar and a new Google Toolbar for Enterprise. The new beta versions of Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer are open and customizable, with new features that enable users to customize their search experience and share information with friends.

Google Toolbar was designed to make the Internet easier to use and help people find the information they are looking for as quickly and easily as possible. The new versions of Google Toolbar now offer customizable buttons, online bookmarks, enhanced search features, new sharing capabilities, and an open API. Google Toolbar for Enterprise beta also includes administration and control for business environments.

“Now we’re putting the tools of innovation in the hands of our users,” said Marissa Mayer, VP of search products and user experience at Google. “We’ve opened up the Google Toolbar to enable them to create their own features and customize their search experience.”

Users can now personalize their Toolbar through the addition of Custom Buttons. Custom Buttons enable users to run search queries directly on any website, receive alerts, and subscribe to feeds, right from their Toolbar. For example, news enthusiasts can now add Custom Buttons to search all their favorite news and see top news stories directly from their Toolbar, putting the information they need at their finger tips, right when they want it.

Google offers users three ways to get Custom Buttons. They can create their own by simply right clicking the search box on any website and selecting “Generate Custom Search”. They can install a Toolbar button offered on one of their favorite websites. Or, they can select ready made buttons from Google’s new Button Gallery. Currently, morebuttons are available, including a variety of Custom Buttons for popular websites. The Button Gallery will display new third-party Custom Buttons as they are created. A simple XML API is now available for content publishers to create more advanced Custom Buttons for their sites.

The new version of Google Toolbar also enables users to create, label and manage bookmarks for their favorite sites with a single click. Bookmarks are now saved to a user’s Google Account making them accessible from any computer. For example, if a user bookmarks an interesting news article at work that they want to read later, they can now easily access it from their home computer.

Additional product enhancements include expanded search functionality that offer users helpful query suggestions and spelling corrections as they type in the search box. Enhanced sharing capabilities allow users to easily send and share web page content via Gmail, SMS, or a blog by selecting the section of page they want to share and clicking the new "Send To" button.

With this release, Google is also offering a new version of the Toolbar for enterprise environments. Google Toolbar for Enterprise beta includes all the new functionality of Google Toolbar, offering the same level of personalization and customization to corporate users. In addition, Google Toolbar for Enterprise includes group policy for administrative control of features, as well as Microsoft System Installer for easy corporate deployment. For example, an enterprise could distribute customized Toolbars to their users pre-loaded with Custom Buttons for Intranet sites, employee directories, and frequently used information sources.

The beta versions of Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer and Google Toolbar for Enterprise for Internet Explorer are currently available in English and will be offered globally in more than 16 languages by the end of the quarter. Both versions of Google Toolbar run on Windows XP and support Internet Explorer 6.0 and higher. More information on the new versions of Google Toolbar is available at toolbar.google.com/T4/.

Google News out-of-beta

Announcement
January 23, 2006

Today we are announcing that Google News is graduating from beta with a couple of shiny new features. When we introduced Google News in September, 2002 our goal was to enable readers to get a broader perspective and dig deeper into the news – perhaps reading ten articles on a topic instead of one.

To do this, we developed a service that delivered news in an entirely new way by presenting it in "clusters" that displayed related articles in a single group. In only a few years, Google News has grown to 22 regional editions in 10 languages.

In addition to taking Google News out of beta, we are also introducing personalized news headlines. By further integrating Personalized Search into Google News, users can now receive recommended news stories based on their past news searches and articles they’ve read, giving them suggestions for interesting stories to explore that they may not have discovered otherwise.

Users who want to receive personalized news headlines simply sign up for Personalized Search. Then, whenever they’re signed in to their Google Account, they’ll see recommended headlines based on what they’ve read in the past. These results appear along the left hand column but users can also get a full page of recommended stories by clicking on the section. All of this is done automatically using algorithms: for example, we might recommend news stories to you that many other users have read, especially when you and they have read similar stories in the past.

We have also added another new section to the left-hand column that shows the most popular recent stories in the Google News edition you are viewing. Now you can see the top stories being published by editors across the web, other stories popular with readers, and topics that you track or are interested in – all on one page.

Additional info about Google News is available at news.google.com/intl/en_us/about_google_news.html. Krishna Bharat, the creator of Google News, also published a related post to the Google Blog that you may find interesting at googleblog.blogspot.com.

Google Talk Federation

Announcement
January 17, 2006

Delivering on its commitment to user choice and open standards, Google today announced that its Google Talk service is now fully interoperable with other communications services that support the server-to-server XMPP protocol. This open interoperability, also known as federation, enables any communications service provider to connect to Google Talk so respective users can talk to each other.

Many service providers worldwide support XMPP federation today, as well as thousands of active XMPP-based communications services run by major corporations, ISPs, universities, and individual users. Some of these service providers supporting XMPP federation include Jabber.org, Earthlink, Sipphone’s Gizmo Project, Chikka (Philippines), MediaRing (Singapore), Tiscali (Italy), and Netease (China).

Email is an example of a federated network that enables people to communicate with one another, regardless of their email provider. Open interoperability is the first step towards bringing a similar level of openness and user choice to instant messaging and VoIP, and with today’s deployment of open server-to-server federation, Google Talk is enabling millions of people worldwide to communicate with each other instantly.

More information about Google Talk can be found at www.google.com/talk and www.google.com/talk/developer.html.

Google to Acquire dMarc Broadcasting

Brings Radio Advertising to Google AdWords Advertisers

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – January 17, 2006 – Google Inc.(NASDAQ: GOOG) today announced it has agreed to acquire dMarc Broadcasting, Inc., a Newport Beach, Calif.-based digital solutions provider for the radio broadcast industry.

dMarc connects advertisers directly to radio stations through its automated advertising platform. The platform simplifies the sales process, scheduling, delivery and reporting of radio advertising, enabling advertisers to more efficiently purchase and track their campaigns. For broadcasters, dMarc’s technology automatically schedules and places advertising, helping to increase revenue and decrease the costs associated with processing advertisements.

In the future, Google plans to integrate dMarc technology into the Google AdWords platform, creating a new radio ad distribution channel for Google advertisers.

"Google is committed to exploring new ways to extend targeted, measurable advertising to other forms of media," said Tim Armstrong, vice president of Advertising Sales, Google. “We anticipate that this acquisition will bring new ad dollars and accountability to radio by combining Google’s expansive network of advertisers with dMarc’s talented team and innovative radio advertising technology. We look forward to working together to continue to grow and improve the ecosystem of the radio industry.”

“We are excited to be joining one of the most innovative companies in the world,” said Chad Steelberg, CEO of dMarc Broadcasting, Inc. “We are bringing together complementary visions of simplicity, efficiency, and accountability to the radio advertising process.”

dMarc customers will not experience any interruption in service. For more information on dMarc Broadcasting, please visit www.dmarc.net.

Transaction and Financial Information

Under the terms of the merger agreement, Google will acquire all of the outstanding equity interests in dMarc, a privately held company, for total up-front consideration of $102 million in cash. In addition, Google will be obligated to make additional contingent cash payments from time to time if certain product integration, net revenue and advertising inventory targets are met over the next three years. The maximum amount of potential contingent payments is $1.136 billion over the next three years. Since these contingent payments are based on the achievement of performance targets, actual payments may be substantially lower. The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions. Google anticipates that the acquisition will close in the first quarter 2006. Substantially all of the payments will be accounted for as part of the purchase price for the transaction.

Safe Harbor

This press release contains forward-looking statements that involve risks and uncertainties, including statements regarding the actual amount of contingent payments that may be made pursuant to the transaction, Google’s expectation that the acquisition of dMarc will bring new ad dollars and accountability to radio and improve Google’s operating performance, Google’s plans to integrate the dMarc technology into the Google AdWords platform following the consummation of the acquisition, and the expected timing for closing the acquisition by the end of the first quarter 2006. Such statements are just predictions and involve risks and uncertainties such that actual results and performance may differ materially. Factors that could cause actual results to differ from our expectations include the failure to

  1. accurately estimate the amount of the contingent payments because of mistaken assumptions or predictions about the ability of dMarc’s business to achieve the performance targets described in the Merger Agreement,
  2. receive regulatory approval for the acquisition,
  3. successfully integrate dMarc and its employees into our organization and achieve expected synergies,
  4. compete successfully in this highly competitive and rapidly changing marketplace in which we have no significant previous experience and
  5. retain key employees.

These and other risks are detailed from time to time in our periodic reports that are filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, including our annual report on Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2004 and our quarterly reports on Form 10-Q for the fiscal quarters ended March 31, 2005, June 30, 2005 and September 30, 2005.

Google Personalized Home for mobile devices

Announcement
January 12, 2006

Today, Google continued the expansion of its mobile offerings with the announcement of Google Personalized Home for mobile devices, a new service that enables users’ access to their personalized Google homepage on their mobile phones and PDAs. With Personalized Home, users on-the-go can view the information they access most frequently from one screen on their mobile device. For example, business travelers can easily keep up with their personal stock quotes while they’re on the road, and news junkies can stay on top of their favorite headlines when they’re away from their desktops and TVs – all without having to search multiple web pages from a mobile device.

Google Personalized Home provides at-a-glance access to information such as Gmail, customized news headlines, local weather, stock updates, hand-picked RSS feeds and more. Information is optimized for the smaller screens and slower bandwidth of most mobile devices and is presented in a format that reduces the need to click multiple links.

Users who have already set up a personalized Google homepage on their PC can simply visit www.google.com through the web browser of their mobile device, select the "Personalized Home" link, and then sign in with their Google account username and password. The next time they visit google.com on their phone, they will automatically see the same customized content modules that are featured on the web version of their Google personalized homepage. (Users who do not yet have a personalized Google homepage on their PC should first visit www.google.com/ig from their desktop computer and select the content to be added to their homepage.)

Google Personalized Home is currently available for free to mobile users in the U.S. and works with any phone that contains an XHTML-capable web browser. Users should check with their carriers on their data service plan to determine if there are additional charges for web access.

For more information about Google Personalized Home, please visit www.google.com/mobile/igoogle/, or see the Reviewer’s Guide in the Google Press Center.

Announcement
January 12, 2006

Today, Google announced two new Google Minis.

We first launched the Google Mini one year ago tomorrow. We’ve been delighted – even a bit overwhelmed – with its success. Thousands of Google Minis now search websites and intranets all over the world. And they continue to find more and more content for customers everyday. (Here’s a map of some customers, with comments on how the Mini is helping their business.)

To celebrate, we’re adding more Minis.

Minis are now available with extended capacity of 200,000 documents for $5,995 and 300,000 documents for $8,995, in addition to the current 100,000 document version available for $2,995.

We’ve taken the bright blue Mini box, the same plug-and-play simplicity, and added more capacity to meet the growing content needs of users. New Mini customers can choose from three models when ordering online from the Google Store. Current Mini customers can upgrade by simply purchasing more capacity.
