Stay Connected with Free Airport Wi-Fi from Google this Holiday Season

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (November 10, 2009) – Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) today announced that it is working with airports across the country as well as Boingo Wireless, Advanced Wireless Group, Airport Marketing Income and others to provide free Wi-Fi as a holiday gift now through January 15, 2010. The gift currently includes 47 airports, including Las Vegas, San Jose, Boston, Baltimore, Burbank, Houston, Indianapolis, Seattle, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Orlando, St. Louis and Charlotte. Additionally, as a result of this project, Burbank and Seattle airports will begin offering airport-wide free Wi-Fi indefinitely.

"We’re very happy to extend our Holiday Wi-Fi gift to the millions of people who will spend time in airports over the next few months," said Marissa Mayer, Vice President of Search Products and User Experience at Google. "We know that this is a very hectic travel season for people, and we hope that free Wi-Fi will make both traveling and connecting with friends and family a little bit easier."

"As a pioneer in providing complimentary Wi-Fi to airport customers, we are very excited about Google partnering with McCarran International along with other airports across the country to bring holiday cheer to so many travelers," said Rosemary A. Vassiliadis, Deputy Director, Clark County Department of Aviation

“Indianapolis International Airport is thrilled to be a part of the Google Holiday Wi-Fi campaign," said Jeremiah Wise, Treasurer, Indianapolis Airport Authority. "Free and open access to the Internet has been a key passenger service initiative since the opening of our new airport. The involvement of sponsors such as Google helps to ensure we can continue to keep Wi-Fi free.”

The upcoming Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s holiday is one of the heaviest travel seasons of the year, and according to FAA estimates, over 100 million people will pass through the participating airports between now and January 15, 2010. Due to bad weather and other extenuating circumstances, travelers often have extra time on their hands in the airport after they pass through security – 70 minutes, on average. Not surprisingly, having an Internet connection during this time can make a difference. A recent study conducted by the Wi-Fi Alliance reported that 50% of business travelers take red-eye flights in order to be "reachable" during business hours, and an overwhelming 82% said that being connected through Wi-Fi would help solve that problem.

“Google gets this year’s Wi-Fi Santa award for sponsoring complimentary access in dozens of airports, both to the traveler’s and airport’s benefit,” said Dave Hagan, president and CEO of Boingo Wireless. “In addition to the obvious bonus holiday travelers will enjoy, sponsored access will increase overall Wi-Fi usage in the participating airports and help supplement the airport’s increasingly important non-airline incremental revenue.”

“Google’s sponsorship of free Wi-Fi in the airports during this holiday season is a welcome gift to airports and Wi-Fi operators alike that continue to strive to find the balance between customer service and revenue concerns; especially during these difficult economic times,” said Scott Phillips, President and CEO of Advanced Wireless Group and Electronic Media Systems.

As another way to pass on the spirit of the season, once they log on to networks in any of the participating airports, travelers will have the option make a donation to Engineers Without Borders, the One Economy Corporation or the Climate Savers Computing Initiative. Google will match the donations made across all the networks up to $250,000, and the airport network that generates the highest amount per passenger by January 1, 2010 will receive $15,000 to donate to the local nonprofit of their choice.

In total, the gift will include 47 airports that together handle over 500 million passengers each year, or about 35% of the total number of annual passengers in the U.S. In October, Google and Virgin America announced that, during this same period, all passengers on Virgin America will have free in-flight Wi-Fi. Five of the airports participating in the program are also Virgin America destinations: Boston, Seattle, Las Vegas, San Diego and Virgin America’s newest destination launching November 18, Fort Lauderdale.

More information about the networks, including a full list of participating airports, is available at www.freeholidaywifi.com.

Google to Acquire AdMob

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (November 9, 2009) – Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) today announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire AdMob, a mobile display ad technology provider, for $750 million in stock. This acquisition will enhance Google’s existing expertise and technology in mobile advertising, while also giving advertisers and publishers more choice in this growing new area.

"Mobile advertising has enormous potential as a marketing medium and while this industry is still in the early stages of development, AdMob has already made exceptional progress in a very short time," said Susan Wojcicki, Vice President of Product Management at Google. "AdMob is the quintessential Silicon Valley startup – generating impressive year on year revenue growth – and we’re excited to welcome this talented team to Google."

"I think people underestimate how important ads have been to funding the development of innovative content on the Internet. Our goal all along at AdMob has been to make it possible for developers and publishers to bring their products and ideas to mobile with the same business model," said Omar Hamoui, Founder and CEO of AdMob. "We’re proud of the progress we’ve made towards accomplishing this goal, and joining Google will only accelerate this process, ultimately leading to very real benefits for end users around the world. As publishers and developers generate more revenue from their mobile products, they will invest more, and their mobile offerings will become richer, more creative and more robust."

The deal will help Google in its efforts to develop more effective tools for creating, serving and analyzing emerging mobile ads formats. As this ecosystem continues to grow, the company expects these new marketing media to offer significant benefits:

  • Advertisers will be better able to engage mobile users with AdMob’s ad formats
  • Publishers and developers will be able to monetize their content more effectively, which has benefits for the wider mobile ecosystem
  • Users will see more relevant ads and ultimately get access to more ad-supported content and applications – improving their mobile experience

"Attracting the world’s top engineering talent and people with entrepreneurial vision to Google has always been crucial to our success. AdMob’s proven track record in innovating at speed will help maintain that culture – which is why we are so excited to be working with them," added Vic Gundotra, Vice President of Engineering at Google.

Both companies have approved the transaction, which is subject to customary closing conditions.

Searching the e-store: Google Commerce Search now available to power retail websites

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (November 05, 2009) – Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) today announced a new hosted enterprise search product, Google Commerce Search™, to power online retail stores and e-commerce websites with the speed and accuracy customers expect from Google™. While e-commerce has advanced significantly in the past 15 years, search technology has been a barrier to online retail growth. The average online retailer conversion rate is just three percent [1] but could potentially be five to ten times higher. [2] Commerce Search will help retail website stores reach their full potential as commercial hubs by improving the shopping experience for customers and the associated conversion rates for retailers.

Google Commerce Search brings retailers:

  • Ultra-fast speed and accuracy, by leveraging Google’s platform to provide sub-second response time to customer queries. Commerce Search also uses proprietary ranking technology to analyze the products in each data feed and serve the most relevant match. High quality, lightening-fast search increases conversions, as customers can quickly find specific products without having to navigate complex hierarchies on a website.
  • E-commerce-specific search features, like parametric search, sorting, spell checker, stemming, and synonym suggestions. These features allow users to easily refine their searches. Retail-specific features like product promotions and product boost allow administrators to fine-tune their marketing approach in real-time and maximize conversions. The rich Commerce Search API also allows retailers to fully customize the search experience on their website.
  • Deployment and scaling ease, because Commerce Search is hosted by Google and fully based in the cloud. Retailers can implement the tool very quickly and don’t need to worry about maintenance. Using the hosted Google platform also allows retailers to scale without concern for seasonal peaks or valleys.
  • Integration with Google tools, like Google Analytics™ and Google Product Search™. Retailers can measure changing conversion rates through Commerce Search integration with Google Analytics on their website. E-commerce vendors benefit from providing a single feed of their catalog items to power Google Commerce Search for their website store and for indexing on Google Product Search. This helps retailers reduce costs and increase consistency across their inventory.

“We’re excited to bring Google Commerce Search to market in time for the holidays,” said Dave Girouard, president, Google Enterprise. “To date the technology powering retail website stores has not kept pace with innovation in search. Google Commerce Search will help customers find accurate results extremely fast, to the benefit of retailers and customers alike.”

Birkenstock USA has implemented Google Commerce Search on one of their online properties and found it made an immediate impact on their business.

“Google Commerce Search is improving user satisfaction – bounce rates have decreased and we’re seeing more return customers,” said Jeff Kilmer, COO, Birkenstock USA. “The search results are ultra-fast, so customers more easily find the specific products they’re looking for. We deployed Google Commerce Search quickly and easily, and we’ve seen dramatic conversion improvement since implementation. It has also meant a better shopping experience for our customers, which is critical given the holiday season rush.”

Better searching means better conversions and a better online shopping experience. Learn more about Google Commerce Search at www.google.com/commercesearch.
