Google Mini™ Integrated Solution Now Offers Secure Search for Businesses of All Sizes

Mountain View, Calif. – January 30, 2007 – Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) – Google today announced that the Google Mini i now offers sophisticated search features for finding and sharing information within small businesses and departmental groups, including document and user-level security, as well as access to any business content through Google Onebox for Enterprise ii.

"When the Google Mini was introduced two years ago, it set a new standard for sophisticated search features in a small, simple and affordable appliance," said Dave Girouard, vice president and general manager, Google Enterprise. "As search becomes more critical to businesses of all sizes, we continue to add even more sophisticated search features that, until now, had only been available to large businesses."

Starting at just $1995, the new Google Mini introduces:

  • Secure Search
Specially enhanced to support the information-sharing needs inside of small businesses and departmental workgroups, the Google Mini offers document and user-level security across all business content. Google’s access control capabilities integrate with existing security systems, ensuring that employees can access only information they are authorized to view.
  • Google OneBox for Enterprise
Introduced last year as part of the Google Search Appliance™ iii, the Google OneBox for Enterprise feature lets businesses provide secure access to any information – such as contact and calendar info, HR benefits, sales leads, or purchase order status – through the convenience of a Google™ search box.

Google OneBox for Enterprise is a feature developed in partnership with some of the world’s leading enterprise application vendors. With Google OneBox for Enterprise, employees can search across a greater variety of corporate information stored in such business systems as Business Objects, Cognos, Cisco, Employease, Microsoft Exchange, Netsuite, Oracle, Salesforce.com, SAP, SAS, and others. Organizations can also create OneBox modules to access applications built in-house.

  • Site Search Improvements
Site administrators can now link the Google Mini search results page with Google Analytics™ iv to provide more detailed information about how people use search on their site in order to improve the overall site experience. The new Google Mini also automatically generates sitemaps – allowing webmasters to expose more public content for crawling and indexing by Google.com.

The Google Mini is offered in versions that search from 50,000 up to 300,000 documents, includes a year of support and is available for purchase online. Thousands of small-business customers already rely on the Google Mini to provide fast and relevant search results for their businesses. A look ahead at Google Video and YouTube

Announcement
January 25, 2007

In November, Google officially closed its acquisition of YouTube, and since then we’ve received a number of questions about what will happen next. The summary is that Google Video and YouTube will continue to play to their respective strengths. But here’s a bit more detail:

Google’s strength – and its history – is grounded in search and in innovating technologies to make more information more available and accessible. YouTube, meanwhile, excels at being a leading content destination with a dynamic community of users who create, watch and share videos worldwide.

Google search results already include links to content that’s hosted on YouTube. Starting today, YouTube video results will appear in the Google Video search index: when users click on YouTube thumbnails, they will be taken to YouTube.com to experience the videos. Over time, Google Video will become even more comprehensive as it evolves into a service where users can search for the world’s online video content, irrespective of where it may be hosted.

This is part of Google’s overall goal to give users the highest quality search results possible. For example, some users who do a Google search for Martin Luther King, Jr. may want to find websites about him. Others may want to see images of him. And others may want to watch video footage…

YouTube, as we’ve stated previously, will remain an independent subsidiary of Google, and will continue to operate separately. Google will support YouTube by providing access to search and monetization platforms and, when/where YouTube launches internationally, to international resources. YouTube co-founders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen and the rest of the YouTube team will continue to innovate exciting new ways for people to "broadcast themselves."

Ultimately, we envision most user-generated and premium video content being hosted on YouTube so that it can further enhance the YouTube experience. We also envision YouTube benefiting from future Google Video innovations – especially those involving video search, monetization and distribution.

Earlier this week, we announced one example of innovation in monetization and distribution with a new AdSense video test. We will be working with a wide set of content providers, grouping together high quality video content from providers with high quality ads and offering them as playlists which publishers can select from and display on their AdSense sites. (For more about that test, click adsense.blogspot.com).

Today represents just the first step in our plan to bring users worldwide a comprehensive video search and content platform. We’ll provide ongoing updates as they unfold.

New Version of Google Groups Gives Groups Their Own Home on the Web

Announcement
January 23, 2007

New Options for Custom, Private Web Pages Take Groups Beyond Message Boards

Starting today, the latest version of Google Groups can give your group its own easy-to-build home on the web for sharing and maintaining information, including tools for creating customized web pages that help you give your group its own special look and feel. Whether you’re running a forum for technology lovers, sharing the latest reviews from your book or wine club, posting practice schedules and team information for your soccer league, or planning a neighborhood barbecue, Google Groups gives you a colorful, central place to collect photos, documents, links, messages, and more over time.

Web products for groups have traditionally focused on an email thread or message board format; they’ve been largely text based. Google Groups, however, now provides a richer forum for group collaboration with the following new features:

  • Pages. Create and contribute to shared web pages with simple drag, drops, cuts, pastes, and clicks (i.e., no coding).
  • Customized look and feel. Select pictures, colors, and styles to express your group’s style.
  • Member profiles. See who else is in the group and read their profiles. Personalize your own profile with a photo and other details.
  • File sharing. Post documents that anyone in the group can access.
  • Easy reading of group discussions. Read easily in a Gmail-style interface.

Group owners have a variety of options for managing access to the group. They can choose to make all content completely private and visible only to group members, or they can offer their pages and resources up to the world. There are also options for controlling viewing and editing capabilities for individual group members.

For those groups who value active discussions, Google Groups continues to offer a variety of options for keeping up with the conversation. From the group’s space on the web, you can reply to another member’s posted message, or post a message or questions of your own. You can also choose whether you want to read and post messages through the group space, or just use your current email account to read and respond.

All you need is an e-mail address to join a Google Group, though a Google Account will enable you to fully take advantage of all the new features of the latest version of Google Groups. All users – including those with existing Groups – will see the new version of Groups when they log in. This is available today at groups.google.com in English (US), English (UK), French, Italian, German, Spanish, Dutch, Brazilian Portuguese, Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, Russian, Swedish, Polish, Turkish, Korean, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, and Japanese.

Google to Digitize More than a Million Books from the University of Texas at Austin, Including World Renowned Latin American Collection

Announcement
January 19, 2007

Today, Google welcomes its latest library partner – the University of Texas at Austin – to the Google Books Library Project. Known as the fifth largest academic library in the United States, the University of Texas Libraries house some of the nation’s leading collections, including the world-renowned Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection. Soon, researchers and history lovers all over the world will be able to search more than one million books and materials from the University of Texas, including selections from these unique works from early Latin American history.

Initially endowed with a unique set of rare books and manuscripts relating to Mexico, the Benson Collection now maintains a wealth of information from Latin America, with special concentrations on Brazil, Chile, Peru, and the countries of the Rio de la Plata and Central America. The Benson Collection chronicles the rich history, politics and society of the region and includes the works of notable Latin American authors.

"Intellectual discovery is at the heart of the scholarly research process," said Fred Heath, vice provost and director of libraries at the University of Texas. "The best collections of information are only as useful as the quality of the tools available for discovering and accessing that information. Joining with Google’s Book Search program will mean that the intellectual content of our collections are discoverable by a much wider range of scholars and students."

Working together, Google and the University of Texas will digitize over a million books from the university’s collection. Anyone will be able to freely view, browse, and read the university’s public domain documents. For books protected by copyright, users will be able to see basic background (such as the book’s title and the author’s name), at most a few lines of text related to their search, and information about where they can buy or borrow a book.

The Google Books Library Project digitizes books from major libraries around the world and makes their collections searchable on Google Book Search. More information can be found at: books.google.com.

Google Search Appliance Adds New Features to Customize Enterprise Search

Announcement
January 4, 2007

Google today announced new features for the Google Search Appliance that give enterprise customers the ability to customize search results for their individual corporate environments. The Google Search Appliance now also offers improved integration with Google services as well as additional content sources.

New features include:

  • Results Hit Clustering are groups of dynamically formed sub-categories based on the results of each search query. These clusters appear at the top of search results and help searchers refine their queries from possible ambiguous terms. For example, if an employee searches for "customer" on the company network, a set of categories could appear at the top of the results with groups of topics such as "customer support" or "customer contacts" to help guide the search. Administrators can customize the location and appearance of Results Hit Clustering within search results.
  • Source Biasing enables administrators to assign various weights to search results on their corporate network, based on source or type of content. For instance, if a company has multiple Documentum servers, the site administrator can strengthen the content from the one primary Documentum server. The same is true for types of content. If a financial services corporation values content in .pdf form more than content in a word processing document, administrators can use Source Biasing to increase the weight of .pdfs in the search results. A menu-driven interface allows weak or strong increases or decreases, and requires no complex coding or scripting.

The new version of the Google Search Appliance also adds improved integration with Google Sitemaps export (for simpler export of information about web pages available for crawling), as well as open source connectors for indexing content in SharePoint 2003 and SharePoint 2007.

For more information, see www.google.com/enterprise/gsa/.
