Google News for mobile devices

Announcement
February 28, 2006

Today, Google announced the availability of Google News for mobile devices, further demonstrating Google’s focus on making the mobile phone a more convenient and reliable device for accessing useful and relevant information while on the go. Whether waiting in the doctor’s office, riding the train to work or standing in line at the local market, mobile phone users will now be able to search and read the latest headlines quickly and easily on their web-enabled mobile devices.

Google News offers quick headline updates, the ability to search current news and browse categories that enable quick and easy access to the news that matters most to individual users. To access Google News, users simply visit google.com on their mobile phone’s web browser, and click the link to Google News. Users will then be directed to links and headlines for the top news stories.

Once an article has been selected, users are sent directly to the news source. Google News also provides users with the option to browse through quick links to specific news categories such as Business, Science/Tech, Sports, Health, and Entertainment. Only sources whose content has been designed specifically for viewing on mobile devices are displayed, ensuring that users can quickly and easily read the news they want.

Google News is currently available in the U.S., and we are exploring opportunities to make the service available in other international markets.

Google Press Statement

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – February 28, 2006 – George Reyes, Chief Financial Officer of Google Inc., participated earlier today in the Merrill Lynch Internet, Advertising, Information, & Education conference. At this conference, Mr. Reyes made remarks regarding, among other things, revenue growth trends and expected sources of revenue growth.

We would like to clarify and provide further information on these statements. As we have stated before, monetization improvements will continue to be a key factor in driving future revenue growth. We still see significant opportunities to improve monetization and intend to continue to focus our efforts in this area.

Moreover, as we have stated in our SEC filings, our revenue growth rate has generally declined over time and we expect that it will continue to do so as a result of the difficulty of maintaining growth rates on a percentage basis as our revenues increase to higher levels.

Safe Harbor Statement

This press release contains forward-looking statements that involve risks and uncertainties, including statements regarding future revenue growth and opportunities to improve monetization. Actual results may differ materially from our expected results. Factors that could cause actual results to differ from our expectations include competition, our ability to innovate, the growth of the market for internet advertising, our ability to penetrate foreign markets and general economic conditions. More information about potential risk factors is included in our report on Form 10-Q for the quarter ended September 30, 2005, and from time to time in other reports that we file with the SEC.

National Archives and Google Launch Pilot Project to Digitize and Offer Historic Films Online

Washington, D.C. and Mountain View, Calif. – Feb. 24, 2006 – Archivist of the United States Allen Weinstein and Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Co-Founder and President of Technology Sergey Brin today announced the launch of a pilot program to make holdings of the National Archives available for free online. This non-exclusive agreement will enable researchers and the general public to access a diverse collection of historic movies, documentaries and other films from the National Archives via Google Video as well as the National Archives website.

"This is an important step for the National Archives to achieve its goal of becoming an archives without walls," said Professor Weinstein. "Our new strategic plan emphasizes the importance of providing access to records anytime, anywhere. This is one of many initiatives that we are launching to make our goal a reality. For the first time, the public will be able to view this collection of rare and unusual films on the Internet."

"Today, we’ve begun to make the extraordinary historic films of the National Archives available to the world for the first time online," said Sergey Brin, co-founder and president of technology at Google. "Students and researchers whether in San Francisco or Bangladesh can watch remarkable video such as World War II newsreels and the story of Apollo 11 – the historic first landing on the Moon."

The pilot program undertaken by the National Archives and Google features 103 films from the audiovisual collections preserved at the Archives. Highlights of the pilot project include:

  • The earliest film preserved in the National Archives holdings by Thomas Armat, " Carmencita – Spanish Dance," featuring the famous Spanish Gypsy dancer,1894;
  • A representative selection of U.S. government newsreels, documenting World War II, 1941-45;
  • A sampling of documentaries produced by NASA on the history of the spaceflight program;
  • Motion picture films, primarily from the 1930s, that document the history and establishment of a nationwide system of national and state parks. Included is early footage of modern Native American activities, Boulder Dam, documentation of water and wind erosion, Civilian Conservation Corps workers, and the establishment of the Tennessee Valley Authority. A 1970 film documents the expansion of recreational programs for inner city youth across the nation.

The National Archives and Google are exploring the possibilities of expanding the on-line film collection and making the Archives extensive textual holdings available via the Internet.

About the National Archives

Google Page Creator

Announcement
February 23, 2006

We’d like to share with you news about a new product that we’ve introduced today on Google Labs and also explain the limited availability. The new product is Google Page Creator, a free, easy, browser-based tool for creating attractive web pages.

Web publishing can be complicated, expensive, and unsatisfying. Google Page Creator has been designed with ease of use in mind. Its unique interface enables users to edit and create pages just as they appear online, without knowledge of HTML or other computer programming languages. Combined with a simple one-step publishing process, users can create attractive, functional web pages in minutes – hosted by Google for free.

Google Page Creator is a web-based tool, meaning no download is necessary. Users need only visit pages.google.com and sign in using their Gmail account to begin creating and publishing their own web pages.

Google Page Creator will be available on Google Labs, an area of our site devoted to our favorite ideas that aren’t quite ready for prime time. We look forward to hearing from our users on how Google Page Creator can be updated and improved to better serve our users’ web publishing needs.

We decided in advance to limit the number of page sign-ups in order to provide users with an optimal publishing experience. Due to extraordinary demand, we recently reached that limit so we have temporarily paused additional sign-ups. We expect to offer sign-ups again very soon. Users may check the Google Page Creator website regularly for updates or submit their email address to a wait list and we will contact them when we have the capacity to support additional users.

Google Desktop 3 Beta

Announcement
February 9, 2006

Today Google is launching Google Desktop 3 Beta (desktop.google.com), the latest version of our flagship desktop application.

The new features in Google Desktop 3 make finding and sharing information even easier for our users. With this version, we’ve added new ways for users to customize the Sidebar, share information with friends, and search for content no matter where it resides.

We know people have a lot going on and can’t always remember where every piece of information they need resides – whether it’s a phone number in an email, a to-do list on a home computer, or a work memo they need access to at 2 a.m. from a hotel in Tallahassee. And we know they don’t have time to go looking for it.

That’s why we want to give users better access to all the information that matters to them. Whether it’s on the web, in their email, or on multiple computers, users should have it at their fingertips when they need it, in a format that’s convenient for them.

With Desktop 3, users can now:

  • Customize and view any combination of personalized information (photos, weather, news, maps, stock quotes, and more) – anywhere on their desktop that’s relevant to them. With the enhanced Sidebar, users can undock panels from the Sidebar and place them directly on the desktop wherever they like.
  • Search the text of their documents and viewed web pages across all their computers. Search Across Computers is an advanced feature designed for people who regularly use multiple computers. It helps users easily access information from all of their computers, so they don’t need to remember where all of their documents are organized or filed.
  • Easily share content from their Sidebar with a friend, including news, websites, games and more. Interesting information in the Sidebar can be emailed to a friend’s inbox or sent directly to a friend’s Sidebar using Google Talk. Users can even play games with their friends right in their Sidebar.
  • Lock Google Desktop search with a Windows password. Search lock helps users prevent other users of that computer from being able to search files.
  • Other new features include: advanced search forms for helping users build advanced queries, spelling suggestions for users’ queries, the ability to disable indexing, the addition of zip file indexing, and an improved preferences page.

Additionally, new Google Desktop APIs enable easy development of Sidebar panel plug-ins that leverage the product’s new communication and sharing capabilities. Dozens of new third-party Sidebar panels have been developed, allowing users to do everything from track items on eBay, receive up-to-the minute job openings, and monitor rush hour traffic. Additional info on Sidebar panels is available at desktop.google.com/plugins/.

Google Desktop is a free downloadable application and runs on Windows XP or Windows 2000 SP3+. The new version is currently available in English but will be offered in 15 international languages by the end of the quarter.

Additional information is available in the product reviewer’s guide at: www.google.com/intl/en/press/guides.html and in today’s blog post at: googleblog.blogspot.com.

Gmail Chat

Announcement
February 8, 2006

Today, Google announced Gmail Chat, the first integration of email and instant messaging in the browser that offers users a seamless communications experience. Gmail Chat enables Gmail users to quickly and easily reach their contacts from directly within their existing Gmail account.

This new offering solves some of the current frustrations with communications, whereby users must choose between different email or IM applications. With Gmail Chat, there’s nothing to download and no new contact lists to build. When users see their existing contacts online, they can either send email or chat instantly. Additionally, Gmail Chat breaks down the arbitrary difference between emails and chats. When chats are saved, they appear as email messages in Gmail, making it easier for users to access and search over important information from their conversations.

Key features of Gmail Chat include:

  • Quick Contacts: Located on the left side of users’ Gmail screens, the Quick Contacts list automatically displays the people they communicate with most frequently. From the Quick Contacts list, users are now one click away from starting an email or chat or viewing recent conversations with a contact.
  • Online presence and status: Users can easily see which contacts are online and available to chat, denoted by a colored icon next to each contact’s name. They can also set their own status message for others to see.
  • Chat history: Users can choose to automatically save chats in their Gmail account, where the chat history is formatted and saved the same as an email conversation. Chats can be easily viewed, searched, forwarded, printed or deleted. Users may also "Reply" to a chat, which sends an email message to the person with whom they were chatting.
  • Chatting off the record: Users can "go off the record" so that a given chat conversation will not be automatically saved in Gmail, by either party.
  • Google Talk synchronization: Users’ Quick Contacts lists sync with their Google Talk Friends list (although the Google Talk download is still needed for free voice calling).
  • No download needed: Innovative AJAX technology enables instant messaging directly in the browser, which means users can chat with their friends anywhere they have Internet access.

The launch of Gmail Chat begins today, and all Gmail users worldwide will have access to Gmail Chat in the coming weeks, further increasing the size of the Google Talk network and broadening the reach of the open standards-based instant messaging community by millions of people. More information about Gmail Chat can be found at
mail.google.com.
