Google Introduces New Business Version of Popular Hosted Applications

Mountain View, Calif. – February 22, 2007 – Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) – today introduced Google Apps Premier Edition, a new version of Google’s hosted services for communication and collaboration designed for businesses of all sizes. Google Apps Premier Edition is available for $50 per user account per year, and includes phone support, additional storage, and a new set of administration and business integration capabilities.

Google Apps™, launched as a free service in August 2006, is a suite of applications that includes Gmail™ webmail services, Google Calendar™ shared calendaring, Google Talk™ instant messaging and voice-over-IP, and the Start Page feature for creating a customizable home page on a specific domain. More than 100,000 small businesses and hundreds of universities now use the service. Google Apps Premier Edition now joins Google Apps Standard Edition and Google Apps Education Edition, both of which will continue to be offered for free to organizations.

"Procter & Gamble Global Business Services (GBS) has enrolled as a charter enterprise customer of Google Apps, a successful consumer product suite now available to enterprises. P&G will work closely with Google in shaping enterprise characteristics and requirements for these popular tools," said Laurie Heltsley, director Procter & Gamble Global Business Services.

"So much of business now relies on people being able to communicate and collaborate effectively," said Gregory Simpson, CTO for General Electric Company. "GE is interested in evaluating Google Apps for the easy access it provides to a suite of web applications, and the way these applications can help people work together. Given its consumer experience, Google has a natural advantage in understanding how people interact together over the web."

Google also today announced that all editions of Google Apps now include Google Docs & Spreadsheets™. In addition, Google Apps now supports Gmail for mobile on BlackBerry™ handheld devices.

"Businesses are looking for applications that are simple and intuitive for employees, but also offer the security, reliability and manageability their organizations require," said Dave Girouard, vice president and general manager, Google Enterprise. "With Google Apps, our customers can tap into an unprecedented stream of technology and innovation at a fraction of the cost of traditional installed solutions."

Features unique to Google Apps Premier Edition include:

  • 10 GBs of storage per user – Offers about 100 times the storage of the average corporate mailbox, eliminating the need to frequently delete email.
  • APIs for business integration – APIs for data migration, user provisioning, single sign-on, and mail gateways enable businesses to further customize the service for unique environments.
  • 99.9 % uptime – Service Level Agreements for high availability of Gmail, with Google monitoring and crediting customers if service levels are not met.
  • 24x7 support for critical issues – Includes extended business hours telephone support for administrators.
  • Advertising optional – Advertising is turned off by default, but businesses can choose to include Google’s relevant target-based ads if desired.
  • $50 per user account per year – Simple and affordable annual fee makes it practical to offer these applications to everyone in the organization.

In addition to Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Talk and Start Page, all editions of Google Apps now include:

  • Google Docs & Spreadsheets – With this addition, teams can easily collaborate on documents and spreadsheets without the need to email documents back and forth. Multiple employees can securely work on a document at the same time. All revisions are recorded for editing, and administrative controls allow organizations to define limits on document sharing. According to custom analysis of Nielsen//NetRatings MegaPanel released this week, 92 percent of users of online productivity tools last October used Google Docs & Spreadsheets, making it the number one product in its class.
  • Gmail for mobile devices on BlackBerry – Gmail for mobile devices provides the same Gmail experience – such as search, conversation view and synchronization with desktop version – on BlackBerry handheld devices for users of Google Apps. Gmail for mobile devices joins a list of other mobile options for Google Apps and BlackBerry users that already includes a Google Talk client and a variety of calendar sync tools.
  • Application-level control – Allows administrators to adapt services to business policies, such as sharing of calendars or documents outside of the company.

"When it comes to our email systems, our doctors don’t have the time or the budgets to deal with managing technology or defending against spam," said Andrew Johnson, chief information officer, San Francisco Bay Pediatrics. "With Google Apps Premier Edition we don’t have to worry about downloading the latest spam filters or navigating unwieldy servers. This is where we let Google do what it does best, so we can do what we do best – help our patients."

In addition to Procter & Gamble Global Business Services and San Francisco Bay Pediatrics, other early adopters of Google Apps Premier Edition include Salesforce.com and Prudential Preferred Properties in the U.S., as well as Essilor and Mediametrie in France.

To provide more options and value to customers of Google Apps Premier Edition, Google Enterprise Professional partners like Avaya and Postini are developing a variety of solutions based on our APIs, including email gateways, enhanced security, Google Calendar synchronization, third-party integration with Google Talk, as well as offering deployment, migration, and additional support services.

Google hosted applications are available in many local languages, such as French, Italian, German, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Please visit www.google.com/a for details on the product, local availability, partners and customers.

Google Checkout Makes It Easy to Shop for Your Sweetheart (or Sweethearts) This Valentine’s Day

Announcement
February 7, 2007

Finding the perfect Valentines Day gift for your sweetheart is hard enough, but what about looking for two? According to a recent survey commissioned by Google Checkout™ and conducted by Harris Interactive, 1 out of every 2 (52%) U.S. adult Valentine’s Day shoppers* will be buying gifts for more than one Valentine this year – for their spouses, for their parents and other family members, for their pets, and maybe even for multiple sweethearts.

What’s more, 43% of U.S. adults who plan to buy a gift for their significant other reported that they plan to buy him or her more than one, while 41% of U.S. online adults who typically buy at least one gift plan to visit more than one website in search of those gifts. With all these sweethearts to shop for, gifts to buy, and stores to visit, Google Checkout is making the process faster and easier.

Through February 15, first-time shoppers on Google Checkout will receive $10 off a one-time purchase of at least $10. This offer is being featured on a wide variety of Google Checkout’s thousands of merchant partners, including Buy.com, Zales, Jockey, Bluefly, Aeropostale, and new partner Blue Nile.

Buying with Google Checkout has never been easier. Google Checkout eliminates an average of 15 steps from the online checkout process, in many cases making checking out as simple as entering a single login – and helping the Casanovas out there save time and trouble when buying gifts for all their sweethearts.

So whether you still need to come up with another gift for your sweetheart (according to the survey, men are more likely to buy multiple gifts for their significant other than women are), or whether you need something cute for your furry friend (pets are expected to get more love than fathers and grandfathers), Google Checkout can help.

If you’d like to learn more about the Google Checkout Valentine’s Day promotion, or the ways that Checkout makes online shopping faster and more convenient, visit checkout.google.com.

Highlights From Survey Results:

Among U.S. adults who typically buy Valentine’s Day gifts:

  • 50% indicated that they purchase multiple Valentine’s Day gifts.
  • Although men and women (both 71%) are equally likely to typically buy at least one Valentine’s Day gift, women (56%) are more likely than men (44%) to buy multiple gifts.
  • 55% of men indicated that they plan to buy for spouse, compared with 44% of women.
  • These adults are more likely to buy Valentine’s Day gifts for their pets (6%) than their fathers (5%) or grandfathers (1%).
  • Women (83%) are more likely than men (74%) to indicate that they typically buy a Valentine’s Day gift for at least one family member.
  • 41% indicated that they plan to purchase from more than one store/website this Valentine’s Day.
  • 11% indicated that they typically spend $10 or less. On average, U.S. adults spend about $70 in total on Valentine’s Day gifts.

Among U.S. adults who typically buy Valentine’s Day gifts for a significant other:

  • Men (50%) are more likely than women (37%) to indicate typically buying multiple Valentine’s Day gifts for a significant other.

==========

Survey Methodology

*The survey was conducted online within the United States by Harris Interactive® on behalf of Google from January 16 to 18, 2007 among 2,214 adults (aged 18 and over), of which 1,546 typically buy at least one Valentine’s Day gift (referred to as “Valentine’s Day shoppers). Figures for age, sex, race/ethnicity, education, region and household income were weighted where necessary to bring them into line with their actual proportions in the general population. Propensity score weighting was also used to adjust for respondents’ propensity to be online. Where appropriate, figures for age, sex, race/ethnicity, education, region, household income and hours per week spent online were weighted where necessary to bring them into line with their actual proportions in the online population.

With a pure probability sample of 1,546, one could say with a ninety-five percent probability that the overall results have a sampling error of +/- four percentage points. Sampling error for subsamples would be higher and would vary. However, that does not take other sources of error into account. This online survey is not based on a probability sample and, therefore, no theoretical sampling error can be calculated.

Princeton University Joins Google’s Library Project

Announcement
February 5, 2007

The shelves of the Princeton University library system speak of its rich history. Founded over 250 years ago, the library shared its first home with the U.S. Continental Congress, endured the ravages of the Revolutionary War, withstood major expansions, and became one of the most advanced and fully networked libraries in the country. And soon, the library will be able to more easily share its unique history and collections with even more students, researchers and book lovers around the world.

Today, Princeton University becomes the latest partner to join Google’s Library Project. The combined collections of the Princeton University libraries total more than six million printed works, five million manuscripts and two million nonprint items. Working together, Google and Princeton will digitize approximately one million public domain books from these collections, so that readers around the world will be able to view, browse, read, and even download public domain materials – all simply by searching online.

"Generations of Princeton librarians have devoted themselves to building a remarkable collection of books in thousands of subjects and dozens of languages," University Librarian Karin Trainer said. "Having the portion of that collection not covered by copyright available online will make it easier for Princeton students and faculty to do research, and joining the Google partnership allows us to share our collection with researchers worldwide, a step very much in keeping with the University’s unofficial motto of Princeton in the nation’s service and in the service of all nations."

Princeton University is the 12th library to join the Google Library Project, which digitizes books from major libraries around the world and makes their collections searchable on Google Book Search. More information can be found at: books.google.com.
